Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

Every school in Ankeny has a PAC consisting of parents representing that building. These representatives, along with the building principal, keep communication lines open between home and school.  This page lists background information on PACs, contact information for members from your school, and minutes of the current year's meetings.

PHILOSOPHY

It is the intent of the Ankeny Schools to provide an educational program designed to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.  We recognize that parental input is paramount if the administration and staff of are to enlist the support of the citizenry in working toward common goals. Furthermore, the responsibility of long-range planning for a better school system is a shared responsibility.

In order to cooperate as fully as possible with parents, a PAC has been established in each school to reflect the views of parents concerning the educational needs and issues of Ankeny students.

OBJECTIVES

PACS provide numerous opportunities:
  • To bring parents of Ankeny students into close contact with the Ankeny schools;
  • For lay persons to talk with the building principal about educational needs and concerns;
  • For PAC members to communicate information to other parents;
  • For parents to contact Council members with concerns which might not come to the attention of building principals;
  • To test ideas which affect the educational program;
  • To enlist the support of parents for the educational process; and
  • For building principals to share their knowledge concerning an issue or topic

DECISION MAKING

The purpose of the PAC is to provide a vehicle by which issues and concerns of parents can be brought to the building principal. Further, the Council serves as a sounding board for the principal to test ideas, programs, and procedures.  Final decision-making or recommendations will be made by the principal.

MEMBERSHIP SELECTION

Parents will be given an opportunity to apply for selection, prior to the end of the school year, for next year's PAC.

Representation includes geographical area, grade level, mothers as well as fathers, and other factors. If parental requests exceed the number established for representation, members are selected by draw.

TERM OF OFFICE

The term of office for all Council members is one year.
